The Pro Bono Work to Empower and Represent (POWER) Act will hold a virtual event on May 20 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, according to an announcement on Apr. 28. The program has been approved for one Continuing Legal Education credit, and registration is now open.
The POWER Act aims to empower survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking by promoting pro bono legal services. The upcoming event seeks to mobilize attorneys interested in providing free legal assistance as well as connect them with community organizations working to close the justice gap for survivors.
According to the announcement, “POWER Act events can serve as a catalyst for change in a community, inspiring attorneys interested in pro bono work and fostering connections with community members, organizations, and coalitions working to close the justice gap for survivors.” Since the passage of the POWER Act, district courts have hosted pro bono legal summits across the country.
In fiscal year 2022 alone, more than eighty percent of district courts sponsored or co-sponsored POWER Act events that reached over six thousand people nationwide. These efforts are highlighted as critical tools for mobilizing both legal professionals and service providers dedicated to supporting survivors.
Looking ahead, organizers hope that continued participation in initiatives like this virtual summit will further expand access to justice through increased volunteerism among attorneys and stronger partnerships within local communities.
