A Venezuelan national living unlawfully in the United States has been sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to resisting arrest by federal officers, according to an announcement from Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

Edward Antonio Reyes Calderon, 23, was involved in a struggle with Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deportation Officers on February 13, 2025. The altercation lasted several minutes as officers attempted to handcuff him. During the incident, pepper spray was used by one of the officers to gain control of Reyes Calderon. Two officers sustained minor injuries as a result.

Reyes Calderon remains in custody while deportation proceedings are pending.

The prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Peter I. Roklan and Taylor A. Dean.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, this case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative led by the Department of Justice aimed at addressing illegal immigration and targeting cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
