A Providence man has been sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison for selling fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills. The announcement was made by Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.
Michael Sellers, aged 40, received a sentence of 70 months from U.S. District Court Judge Mary S. McElroy. Following his incarceration, he will undergo five years of supervised release. In March, Sellers pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing fentanyl.
During his plea, Sellers confessed to selling over 1,000 counterfeit fentanyl-laced pills on at least two occasions. On November 16, 2023, he sold 1,027 such pills for $2,500 in cash. A similar transaction occurred on November 24, 2023, involving 1,024 pills for the same amount. Both transactions were monitored by the FBI and the pills were seized.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Peter I. Roklan and Stacey A. Erickson and investigated by the FBI.
