A North Smithfield man, Nicholas Stone, has been sentenced to 17 years in state prison for driving under the influence and causing a crash that resulted in the death of 63-year-old Thomas Lamoureux and serious injury to 36-year-old Jeremy Davis. The sentencing took place in Providence County Superior Court.

On February 18, 2026, Stone, age 27, entered a plea of nolo contendere to several charges. These included driving under the influence resulting in death and serious bodily injury, driving to endanger resulting in death and serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and serious bodily injury, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in damage to a vehicle, felony reckless driving, and driving under the influence. Superior Court Justice Jeffrey A. Lanphear imposed a sentence of 25 years with 17 years to serve at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI), followed by 25 years of probation. Additional penalties include an eight-year suspension of Stone’s license upon release, 60 hours of community service, substance abuse counseling, and $6,100 in fines.

Attorney General Peter F. Neronha commented on the case: ā€œBecause of this defendant’s reckless actions, one man died and another suffered permanent injuries,ā€ said Attorney General Neronha. ā€œDriving under the influence is an infuriating crime because every instance is entirely preventable, and so often it leads to severe injury or death, both of which occurred here. While I’m grateful that this defendant will pay significantly for his crimes, nothing can undo the harm caused to the victims and their families. I hope they now feel some sense of closure.ā€

According to investigators’ findings presented by prosecutors during court proceedings, on October 25, 2023 at around 9:40 PM Rhode Island State Police responded to reports of a hit-and-run crash on Route 146 North at Sayles Hill Road in North Smithfield. Upon arrival troopers found two victims who had been struck by a vehicle; Thomas Lamoureux was pronounced dead at the scene while Jeremy Davis was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with severe injuries.

Surveillance evidence showed that earlier that evening Stone purchased alcohol from Washington Hill Liquors in Lincoln twice—first at about 7:11 PM for nine nips and again at about 9:20 PM for nine more nips along with a large can of beer—before he drove northbound on Route 146. He then struck Mr. Davis with his BMW sedan before hitting Mr. Lamoureux and carrying him on the hood for roughly 600 feet. After side-swiping a RIPTA passenger van Stone fled toward a Walmart parking lot where he called his mother and confessed what had happened; she contacted authorities immediately.

When police located Stone’s heavily damaged car at Walmart they attempted field sobriety tests but he refused cooperation and asked for medical attention instead; he was taken by ambulance to Landmark Medical Center where he also refused a chemical test for intoxication. Police obtained a warrant for his blood sample which later showed his blood alcohol content was .161—more than twice Rhode Island’s legal limit—approximately ninety minutes after the collisions occurred.

The investigation was led by Special Assistant Attorney General Steve Regine together with Troopers Brendan Degnan and Joshua Dilibero from Rhode Island State Police.
