A man from Dighton, Massachusetts, has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison following a DUI crash that left six people hospitalized and four seriously injured. The sentencing took place in Providence County Superior Court, where Cary Guy, age 33, received a total sentence of 17 years: 10 years to serve at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) and seven years of probation. Additional penalties include mandatory alcohol counseling and treatment, as well as a six-year loss of his driverās license upon release.
Prior to sentencing by Superior Court Justice David Cruise on January 15, 2026, Guy entered a nolo contendere plea to multiple charges: four counts each of driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury and driving to endanger resulting in serious bodily injury, along with two counts of driving to endanger resulting in physical injury.
Attorney General Peter F. Neronha commented on the case: āDriving under the influence is a crime that is as reckless as it is entirely avoidable. When this defendant drove drunk, he endangered the lives of everyone on the road that evening, including the six victims that he sent to the hospital for serious injuries. There is no excuse for this type of behavior, and my Office will continue to hold accountable those who threaten the lives of others by driving impaired.ā
The State indicated it was prepared to show at trial that Guy was intoxicated when he drove his vehicle in the wrong direction on Route 195 East in East Providence on May 24, 2022. At approximately 7:25 p.m., Guy collided head-on with several vehicles while traveling at an estimated speed of 88 miles per hour before impact. Authorities responded quickly after being notified around 7:33 p.m., with both East Providence and Rehoboth Police Departments alerting Rhode Island State Police.
First responders transported Guy and five other victims to Rhode Island Hospital; another victim was taken to Charlton Memorial Hospital. Law enforcement attempted sobriety testing at the hospital but had to obtain a search warrant after Guy refused a chemical blood test; subsequent analysis revealed his blood alcohol content was .109.
The investigation and prosecution were led by Special Assistant Attorney General Stephen Regine from the Attorney Generalās Office alongside Detective Corporal Adam Houston and Detective Corporal Brian Macera from Rhode Island State Police.
