A former North Attleboro resident, Jason Lopes, has been convicted of manslaughter in the 2010 killing of Zackary Marshall in Providence. The verdict was delivered by a jury in Providence County Superior Court on November 20, 2025, after a 10-day trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Maureen B. Keough.
Attorney General Peter F. Neronha commented on the outcome: “Petty arguments should never end in tragedy, yet that’s exactly what happened here. Because of the actions of this defendant, who evaded accountability for too long, Zack’s family will forever bear the heartbreak of his loss. I hope this verdict finally provides them with some semblance of peace, which they have long deserved. I’m grateful to the Providence Police Department and my prosecutors for their exceptional work on this difficult case.”
The prosecution established that during the early morning hours of December 18, 2010, Lopes stabbed Marshall outside a bar on Peck Street following an altercation. Police responded to a disturbance at around 2:07 a.m., finding Marshall with four stab wounds to his chest and torso at the intersection of Friendship Street and Peck Street. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital but was pronounced dead.
Both men had been leaving nearby restaurants with friends when they became involved in an argument that escalated into violence. After stabbing Marshall, Lopes fled with his group.
The investigation initially stalled as no witnesses could identify Lopes or those he left with. The case remained unsolved until 2020 when a friend of Lopes, arrested on unrelated charges, revealed that Lopes had called him for a ride from downtown Providence around 3 a.m. on the night of the murder. During that ride, Lopes admitted to being involved in a fight and stabbing someone and named three people who were present during the incident.
Investigators subsequently interviewed these individuals; two testified before a Grand Jury that Lopes was responsible for the stabbing. This new evidence led to Lopes’ indictment by a Grand Jury and his arrest in Texas on March 12, 2021. During questioning after his arrest, Lopes admitted to stabbing Marshall during their confrontation.
Providence Police Colonel Oscar L. Perez Jr. said: “Violence has no place in our community, and I’m grateful that this case is finally resolved. The men and women of the Providence Police Department work tirelessly to ensure the safety of our community members, and hold accountable those responsible for tragedies such as this one. I commend the work of our officers and our partners in the Attorney General’s Office for their investigation and prosecution of this case.”
Assistant Attorney General Timothy Healy led the prosecution alongside Detectives Angelo A’Vant and Sean Brown from the Providence Police Department.
