A Guatemalan national, Rigoberto Cano Perez, has pleaded guilty to reentering the United States illegally after being deported in November 2024. Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced the plea.

Perez, aged 28, was initially removed from the U.S. by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a conviction in Rhode Island state court in December 2023 for simple assault or battery and disorderly conduct.

On May 12, 2025, Immigration Officers identified Perez through an automated biometric fingerprint match entered into the National Crime Information Center. He had been arrested in Rhode Island the previous day for violating a domestic no-contact order and on charges of domestic disorderly conduct.

Perez is scheduled for sentencing on August 28, 2025. A federal district judge will determine his sentence based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Assistant United States Attorneys Taylor A. Dean and Peter I. Roklan are prosecuting the case, which was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

This case is part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations while protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators.
