A Guatemalan national, Rigoberto Cano Perez, has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Rhode Island for allegedly reentering the United States illegally. Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced the indictment, which follows Perez’s deportation from the U.S. in November 2024.

Court records indicate that Perez, 28, was previously convicted in Rhode Island state court in December 2023 on charges of simple assault and/or battery and disorderly conduct. He was subsequently removed from the United States by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on November 20, 2024.

On May 12, 2025, immigration officers identified Perez through an automated biometric fingerprint match entered into the National Crime Information Center. This identification followed his arrest in Rhode Island on May 11, 2025, for allegedly violating a domestic no-contact order and facing a domestic disorderly conduct charge. Currently, he is held at the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institute based on these state charges.

Perez is scheduled to be arraigned on June 2, 2025. It is important to note that a federal indictment is merely an accusation; a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Assistant United States Attorneys Taylor A. Dean and Peter I. Roklan are prosecuting the case following an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

This case falls under Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative aimed at addressing illegal immigration and protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators—streamlining efforts from various Department of Justice resources.
